A Worthy Listen: The Staves

Oh my word, these ladies got skills!  I have always been a sucker for clear and simple harmonies, and these three sisters serve it up on a rustic wooden platter.  This acoustic folk trio hails from Watford, England, and I am thankful to my friend Mitchell for introducing me to them.

They currently have two EP's, a live album, and a debut album set to be released in October.

Free at Last

Graduate school is done.  In order to cope with my deep depression at not having to read text books every night... yea right.  Sweet victory, I have free time again!  I decided to make a list of things that I want to pursue now that I have time to pursue them.

-Jogging-

I have been jogging for the past year, but have kept my mileage at two.  It is time to step up my game and increase my mileage- time is no longer an excuse Kelsey!

-Yoga-

I used to do yoga weekly, but have slacked off.  I really notice a difference in my posture and flexibility when I do it, so it needs to make a reappearance into my schedule.

-Ballet-

Kelsey in pink tights is back!  Watch out!  I had my first week back at ballet last Thursday and it was just marvelous.  I also decided to take a Beginning Pointe class.  I just bought my pointe shoes, and my toes are not excited about my decision, but my heart is beyond thrilled- sorry toes, get over it.

-Cooking-

I have a drawer full of recipes (carefully categorized by type, of course) that have been neglected.  This is an atrocity, and I plan on rectifying that by going through the drawer and weeding out the keepers from the criminally bland.  I'll try to post the good ones on here.

-European History-

I adore European history.  I think it is a fascinating subject that I have always wanted to know more about.  Cue my "European History for Dummies" book that I have started to read.  Lame you say?  I disagree.  So far (and I have just finished reading about the Romans), the author has proven to be witty and very straightforward.

-Spanish-

I have had two years of Spanish and spent a semester in Montevideo, Uruguay, but I need to be diligent in keeping up what I have.

-Novels-

READ MORE CLASSICS.  Enough said.

-The Paper Menage-

I really want to work hard to create a cohesive brand and image for my Etsy shop as well as create more notecards for you to purchase lots of (hint hint).

Quite a list, I know

A Worthy Listen: Poet's Row

Poet's Row is delightful.  Emily Hobbs (who used to give me the best haircuts over good chats in college) & Mickey Bakas (who has never given me a haircut because we've never met) are the creative geniuses behind Poet's Row.  Their music is raw, haunting, and original.  With a folk flair, Poet's Row has quickly become one of my favorite bands.

A Worthy Read: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Looks super creepy right?!  Anybody who knows me knows that I DESPISE watching scary movies (especially ones with demonic children).  So why in the world would I pick up a book with a cover like this?

I was intrigued.

I knew I might get myself scared, but something about this cover and the book description drew me in, and I am so glad it did!

This book was amazing!  It wasn't scary at all, definitely suspenseful in parts, but not wake up sweating type of scary.  It follows a young man who has just witnessed the death of his grandfather.  Jacob's grandfather's dying words are mysterious and send him on a journey to discover their meaning.  Jacob finds some pretty interesting things...

The story was so original and creative and Mr. Riggs kept me guessing the whole time.  The book features photos throughout that tie to the story which was really fun.

You won't be disappointed and you won't be freaked out, trust me

A Worthy Read: Swamplandia!

This book by Karen Russell is wonderful.

The story follows three siblings as they experience the decline of their family owned alligator theme park, Swamplandia (can you imagine owning an alligator theme park?!).

The story moves slowly at first, but all of a sudden gets really intense and mysterious.  It is a strange, sad, whimsical, and delightful novel.

Read it!
